The name is pretty self explanatory that the zinc finish process will either use a barrel or rack (jig) system. Generally the barrel plating process is for smaller parts, fasteners, hardware, etc. In contrast, the rack zinc plating process is used for large, complex or fragile parts. The rack system also provides for a higher quality finish over the barrel method, but the barrel method provides for a greater labor savings and cost.

Some benefits of this plating are:

  • Improved corrosion resistance
  • Reduced finishing cost for small parts
  • Ease of application
  • Improved adhesion
  • Paint undercoat

The zinc is transferred to the surface of the part via an electric current (electroplating). The final coating acts to protect the part from corrosion. This inherently reduces maintenance and increases the longevity of the finished part.
